Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth
Dental disease is not uncommon among dogs. However, this disease is preventable with preventative measures like a crunchy diet, chew treats, and tooth brushing. To brush your dog’s teeth, all you need is a soft-bristled toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste. With these items in hand, you are ready to begin.
Allow your dog to taste the veterinary toothpaste. Once your dog is acquainted with its taste, put the veterinary toothpaste on the toothbrush, and place the toothbrush bristles around the gums of the upper back teeth at an angle; this method allows the toothbrush bristles to get under the gum line. While making circles along your dog’s gum line, work the toothbrush from back to front.
Your pet may be apprehensive at first about getting its teeth cleaned. However, according to Petplace.com, if your pet lets you brush “the outside of the upper teeth, you are still addressing the most important part of periodontal disease–prevention.” By brushing your dog’s teeth regularly, you are doing your part in giving it a happy, healthy smile.
